How to Record Your Screen on Windows: Built-In Tools vs. Browser Extension
Windows ships with two different built-in screen recorders — Xbox Game Bar and the Snipping Tool — and neither one can record everything on your screen. Here is how each one works, the desktop-recording gap that catches people out, and when a browser extension is worth adding instead.
Mac users have QuickTime. Chromebook owners have a recorder built into the system tray. Windows has two built-in options instead of one, and they don’t do the same thing — which is part of why so many Windows users end up not realizing either exists until they go looking for a third-party download first.

The built-in Windows screen recorders
Xbox Game Bar is the faster of the two. It’s built into Windows 10 and 11, and it’s designed around recording gameplay — but it works on any app window, not just games.

The recording gap that catches people out
The single most common surprise with Windows’ native recorder isn’t a setting — it’s a limitation almost nobody expects the first time they hit it: Xbox Game Bar can’t record the desktop or File Explorer.
Try to record your desktop background, a File Explorer window, or the taskbar, and Game Bar shows a message to the effect of “can’t record this app” instead of starting. This isn’t a bug — Game Bar is built to capture individual application windows through Windows’ game-recording APIs, and the desktop and File Explorer were never wired up to support it. The Snipping Tool’s region-based record mode sidesteps this, since it captures whatever pixels are inside the selection box regardless of which app owns them — including the desktop. It’s worth knowing which of the two built-in tools to reach for before you’re mid-recording and hit the wall.
What the built-in tools don’t do
Once you’re past the desktop-recording gap, both native tools share the same shortcomings — they’re built to capture the screen, not to produce something ready to explain itself:
- No live annotation. Neither tool can draw an arrow or circle a button while you’re recording — the exact gap live annotation closes, so pointing at something means describing its location out loud instead.
- No camera bubble. There’s no built-in way to overlay your webcam on top of a screen capture, so a face-in-the-corner presentation means running a separate camera app and syncing two files afterward.
- No isolated tab audio. Game Bar’s microphone toggle captures your voice, and it can pick up whatever audio the recorded app is playing, but there’s no way to capture just one browser tab’s sound while muting the rest — everything else on your system is fair game too.
- No editing after the fact. What you record is what you get. No trimming a rough start, no adding a callout after the take, no undo.
- No direct sharing. The finished file sits in your Captures folder until you manually attach, upload, or move it somewhere.
None of that makes the built-in tools bad — they’re a solid default for a fast, throwaway capture. They just weren’t designed for tutorials, demos, or anything meant to look finished before someone else sees it.

The practical rule of thumb: use the built-in tools when you need a fast, throwaway capture, know exactly which app window you’re recording, and don’t need to touch the desktop. Reach for an extension the moment you’re narrating over the recording, pointing at specific UI elements, capturing something outside a single app window, or sending the file to someone who’ll judge it as a finished piece of communication — a tutorial, a bug report, or a product demo.
